Nissan hardbody rear differential

I have a 2WD Nissan Xterra and want to change the differential fluid. I located the drain plug and the fill plug but is there more to it than simply draning and refilling the gear oil?

Just make sure you park on a level surface and fill the diff up till it starts coming out of the fill hole. Be sure to use the correct diff fluid as well. If it's an automatic use 75W-90 GL-5 synthetic and if it's a 6 speed or O/R then use 75W-140 GL-5 synthetic.

I have read in other posts somewhere that some people have unplugged the rear end awd plug to make sure that the electric clutch doesnt go out, to make the AWD murano to 2WD. my rear differential is broken because it wasn't enough oil on it, so I want to make my car run to show that to some mechanics. If some one know where is the plug and how can I unplug it please let me know. Thank you

I have seen broken rear differentials gears can lock up inside Differential case & Skid out of Control. Front transverse case broken on murano same lock up can happen but now with the front axle. If your car is broken don't try to drive it. If the mechanic has ever done this job they can tell you approximately what the cost will be. The electric clutch on the front differential may be damaged already. Your best bet is the Nissan Dealership Mechanic. Even if you have to use used parts to fix your Murano. Removing rear axles differential and drive shaft might be harder than you think. Because rear wheel bearing need axle bolted thru it to hold the bearings and brake rotor wheel bolt flange in the bearing. JUST DON'T DRIVE TILL FIXED

I just need to know what size wrench I need for the rear diff. for a 2005 Nissan Xterra. I need to know the size for the drain plug and fill plug. Thanks all.

It's either a 10mm "Allen" head socket or just a 3/8 ratchet without any socket. If it's square then you just use a ratchet but I'm pretty sure it's the 10mm allen socket. I'm not at work right now so I can't give you a def. answer.

How much gear oil will the rear differential take to fill it up? Can you buy a new gasket for the plug at most parts store? Thinking of useing Amzoil 80w90.

your owners manual will give you the capacity. i would recomend using only what the factory recomends.
